Very close to the Astros, you can find the wetland of Moustos. It is rumored that it used to be the first harbor of Paralio Astros from which must was loaded, since in the old days the area of Thyrea was famous for its vineyards. So this is how it got the name Moustos (moustos – must).
This wetland is of great environmental importance. Both flora (cumbungis, reeds, rocks, etc.) and fauna (fish, eels, water birds, etc.) are rich in the region. Besides the natural inhabitants of the lagoon, every year a big number of water birds (swans, herons, wild ducks etc.) spend the winter there, enjoying the excellent climatic conditions and the hospitality of the inhabitants. A wetland can affect the climate of a region. Therefore, Moustos ensures coolness during the summer months. In the past, such places were sources of illnesses (malaria), but nowadays more and more visitors visit such places to admire their beauty. Our obligation is to keep it clean by preventing any pollution from any kind of waste.
